I'm writing with some sad news, our little friend Sam died yesterday afternoon. We knew that the moment could come at any time, but were still caught by surprise when Katy came home to find him. This news reminds us that this life is beautiful, but fragile, and we thirst all the more for our experience in the new creation.

"The whole brute creation will then, undoubtedly, be restored, not only to the vigour, strength, and swiftness which they had at their creation, but to a far higher degree of each than they ever enjoyed. They will be restored, not only to that measure of understanding which they had in paradise, but to a degree of it as much higher than that, as the understanding of an elephant is beyond that of a worm. And whatever affections they had in the garden of God, will be restored with vast increase; being exalted and refined in a manner which we ourselves are not now able to comprehend."

A Welsh holiday

With the knowledge that flights for two back home to the US this year would be a little out of our budget, we decided to plan a little retreat for the new year with some friends from Regent who are in the UK right now (Oxford). Our goal was to find a remote cottage somewhere between Oxford and Edinburgh to spend a week relaxing at, and thus we settled on the little gem you see above: Pwyl Pendre cottage in Hafod, Wales. The cottage did not disappoint - we were surrounded by acres of countryside filled with...

though we spent most of our time inside, enjoying the woodstove, good books, games, and conversation.

Much to our further delight as you can see in the photo above, we found that the cottage had been decorated for Christmas!

Winter Wonderland

We have had some crazy snow here in Edinburgh. For the past week or so the city has been nearly shut down with many businesses closed. Not Katy’s work though, she works for ‘the man’ and ‘the man’ never sleeps! Being a council employee means that there have been some pretty interesting treks to work, but at least the snow has made for some beautiful scenery to and from. Here are some photos we took on a recent afternoon walk after another night of snow.
